This itinerary is a starting point. The order and pace can be adjusted once we know what matters most to you.

1

Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Benhaddou

Depart Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres Morocco's highest paved mountain road, built by the French in 1936. Summit views run over ridge after ridge of the Atlas in both directions. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Ait Benhaddou with a local guide, crossing the Oued Mellah to explore the interconnected mud-brick kasbahs used as a film location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Babel. Continue through Ouarzazate's Kasbah Taourirt, the Skoura palm oasis and the Rose Valley of Kalaat Mgouna, where thousands of tonnes of damask rose petals are harvested each year for perfume, to Boumalne Dades.

Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge and Merzouga

A morning among the Monkey Fingers rock formations in the Dades Gorge, pale limestone pillars sculpted by erosion. Drive east to Todra Gorge, where 300-metre limestone walls rise from a clear river in a canyon barely 10 metres wide at its narrowest and a world-class climbing destination. Walk the gorge, then pass through Erfoud's fossil marble workshops, where Devonian trilobites are polished out of black limestone, and Rissani's ancient covered souk, the birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite royal dynasty. Arrive in Merzouga as Erg Chebbi turns copper-gold for a sunset camel trek into dunes reaching 150 metres. Overnight at a luxury Berber camp with a tagine dinner and live campfire drumming under the open desert sky.

Sahara Day: Sunrise, Gnaoua Music and a Nomad Visit

Rise before dawn to climb a dune crest for the Sahara sunrise, deep indigo shifting to gold as the first light crosses the erg. Breakfast at camp is Berber omelette, khobz, amlou and three-pour mint tea. A morning 4x4 excursion takes you to Khamlia, a village of the Gnaoua people, descendants of sub-Saharan Africans brought north along the trans-Saharan trade routes, whose guembri and krakeb music is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and still part of an active healing ceremony. Visit a nomadic Berber family in their goat-hair tent to hear about seasonal migrations, oral poetry and the networks that sustain desert life. The afternoon is free for optional quad biking, sandboarding or a second camel ride along the dune crests at golden hour.

Merzouga to Fez via the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas

Head north through the Ziz Valley, a 70-kilometre ribbon of date palms threading through ochre canyons, with underground khettara irrigation channels that have worked for over a thousand years. The valley narrows into the Ziz Gorges before opening onto the high plains of Errachidia. Climb into the Middle Atlas through Midelt and the cedar forest at Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques roam among the trees, then on through Ifrane, the 'Switzerland of Morocco' at 1,665 metres, whose stone chalets and manicured parks contrast sharply with the desert left behind. Arrive in Fez for a first evening walk through the lantern-lit alleys of the medina.

Full Guided Day in the Fez Medina

A full day in Fez el-Bali with a licensed local guide through the world's largest car-free UNESCO World Heritage medina. Visit Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and often cited as the world's oldest continuously operating university, and the Bou Inania Madrasa (1350–57), a high point of Marinid carved stucco and zellige. See the Chouara Tanneries from a rooftop terrace, their stone vats of saffron, poppy and indigo dye little changed since the 11th century. Pass the brass gates of the Royal Palace, walk the Mellah Jewish Quarter, visit the Nejjarine woodworking museum and finish at the Borj Nord fortress for a view over the whole old city.

Fez to Chefchaouen via Volubilis and Meknes

Drive west to Volubilis (UNESCO) with a specialist guide, Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site, with intact mosaic floors showing the Labors of Hercules and Orpheus Charming the Animals, the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla (217 AD) and the foundations of the Capitoline temple. Continue to Meknes for the monumental Bab Mansour gateway, whose marble columns were taken from Volubilis, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Arrive in Chefchaouen as the blue lanes of the old town glow deeper in the evening mountain light.

Chefchaouen to Casablanca via Rabat

A last morning in Chefchaouen's blue medina: the 15th-century Kasbah museum, artisan workshops producing hand-woven djellabas in natural dyes, and the Spanish Mosque hillside viewpoint over the blue rooftops and the Rif peaks. Drive south along the Atlantic coast to Rabat for the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the 12th-century Almohad Hassan Tower and the 17th-century Oudaya Kasbah with its Atlantic views. Continue to Casablanca for an evening along the illuminated Corniche.

Casablanca to Essaouira

A guided morning visit inside the Hassan II Mosque, one of the world's largest, built partly over the Atlantic with a 210-metre minaret, hand-carved stucco, zellige tilework and a retractable roof. Drive south through the argan forests of the Souss-Massa region, stopping at a women's argan oil cooperative for traditional stone-grinding and an amlou tasting. Arrive in Essaouira, the 'Wind City of Africa', whose UNESCO World Heritage medina dates from 1764. Walk the Skala de la Ville sea walls with their old cannons, the fishing port and the thuya wood workshops, then eat freshly grilled sardines at the harbour.

9

Essaouira Free Day

A full free day in Essaouira, the most relaxed and wind-cooled city on the route. Browse the medina galleries and artisan workshops at your own pace, walk the long Atlantic beach south of the ramparts where the trade winds draw kitesurfers from around the world, watch the morning fish auction at the port, or take an optional horse or camel ride on the beach. Essaouira has one of Morocco's liveliest arts scenes, and Jimi Hendrix is said to have stayed here in 1969.

In Marrakech, spend a last afternoon at the Majorelle Garden, designed by the painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later owned by Yves Saint Laurent, and the 12th-century Koutoubia minaret, then a final evening on Jemaa el-Fna before the tour concludes.
