Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen sits in the Rif Mountains, its old town washed in blue from a centuries-old tradition. It's less about sights than atmosphere, worth a couple of unhurried days instead of a rushed day trip, especially early in the morning before the streets fill up.
Planning a visit to Chefchaouen
How long to stay
One night is the minimum, and two lets you see the town without hurrying. Add a third if you want to walk to the Akchour waterfalls. A day trip is possible from Fez or Tangier, but the town is calmest after the day visitors leave.
What a visit looks like
The blue-washed medina is for slow walking, with no fixed list of sights: the main square and the kasbah, the lanes above it, and the spring at the edge of town. Early morning, roughly 7 to 9, gives the best light and the quietest streets.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. July and August are hot, often above 35 degrees. In winter the town is quiet and cooler, and some guesthouses and rooftop cafes keep shorter hours.
