Todra and Dades Gorges
The Todra and Dades gorges sit within a couple of hours of each other, each carved by a river through the same red rock as the kasbahs nearby. The Todra's narrow walls make for a short, dramatic walk; the Dades valley's switchback road is worth the drive on its own. Both are usually a stop between the Atlas and the Sahara, not a separate trip.

How long to stay
The two gorges together take a long day, or an overnight if you want to walk. The Todra Gorge is quick to see from the road, and the longer time is for hiking.
What a visit looks like
Todra is a narrow canyon with high rock walls, near the oasis town of Tinghir. A loop hike through the area is around 10 km and takes about four and a half to five hours. In the Dades Valley, the viewpoint over the rock formations known as Monkey Fingers is the usual stop, with an easier walk of a few kilometres near the Ait Arbi bridge. Ask before photographing local people.
When to go
Spring is the best season, with green valleys. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light on the rock. Midday can be hot, so carry water and sun protection. The canyons can be dangerous after heavy rain, so we check the forecast before any hike.
How it fits with the rest of a trip
The gorges sit on the road between Merzouga and Ouarzazate, so our desert routes pass through them. We can add a hike or a night here to a trip from Marrakech or Fez.
