Fez el-Bali, the old medina, dates to the 9th century and still functions as a living city: tanneries, madrasas, thousands of workshops packed into narrow lanes. It rewards a guide who actually knows it, since there's no reliable way to navigate by map alone.

Planning a visit to Fez
How long to stay
Two full days is the minimum for the old medina, Fes el-Bali, and three is more comfortable. The lanes are closed to cars, so everything is on foot, and it is easy to lose half a day to the maze alone.
What a visit looks like
A guided first morning makes the medina much easier to read. Typical stops are the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the few religious buildings in the city that non-Muslims can enter, and the Chouara tanneries, which are seen from the terraces of the surrounding leather shops. Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often called the oldest continuously operating university in the world, can be seen only from the outside.
When to go
March to May and September to November are the pleasant months. Summer days often pass 35 degrees, which is hard going in the narrow lanes. Winter can be cool and rainy, though the city is quieter.
How it fits with the rest of a trip
Fez is a departure city for several of our private routes, and it is also the usual point where a loop through the imperial cities, Chefchaouen or the Sahara turns. Meknes and Volubilis are an easy day trip from here.
