Merzouga or Zagora: which Sahara fits your trip?
One has the tall golden dunes, the other is far closer to Marrakech. The right answer depends on how many days you have.
Written by Morocco Tailored Tours.
Most people asking this question are really asking how much of their trip they're willing to spend in a vehicle. Merzouga and Zagora are both genuine Saharan departure points, but they sit at very different distances from Marrakech and deliver noticeably different landscapes.
Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, a single sweeping sea of sand dunes, some of them reaching well over a hundred metres high. This is the Sahara of the postcards: golden, sculpted ridges, sunrise and sunset colour that shifts by the minute, and camps set right among the dunes. The catch is distance. From Marrakech it's a long day of driving, roughly nine to ten hours with stops, which is why most itineraries treat it as a three-day minimum and stop overnight in the Dades or Todra area on the way.
Zagora is considerably closer, typically around six hours from Marrakech over the Atlas, and it's historically the gateway to the Draa valley, a long green ribbon of palm groves and ksour. What it offers is a rockier, more varied desert: palm oasis, stony plains, and smaller dunes rather than one towering erg. The really big dunes on the Zagora side, at Erg Chigaga near M'Hamid, are a further, rougher drive beyond the town itself, which many short tours never reach.
The simplest way to choose is by time. With only two days, Zagora is the realistic option, and it's still a worthwhile night out, just not the dune landscape most people picture. With three days or more, Merzouga is usually worth the extra distance, especially if you build in stops along the way rather than treating the drive as a transfer. The route itself, through Ait Benhaddou and the Dades and Todra gorges, is a big part of why the longer trip tends to feel better than the map suggests.
A few practical points apply to both. Nights can be cold in winter even when days are warm, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, and summer heat in the desert is a serious consideration. Camps vary from simple to very comfortable, so it's worth asking what's actually included rather than assuming. Our complete Sahara guide and the piece on getting from Marrakech to the desert cover logistics in more detail, and we're happy to build either route as a private itinerary.
