Essaouira
Essaouira trades the desert heat for sea air. Its 18th-century ramparts, working fishing port, and steady coastal wind make it a popular closing stop after the interior, and a favourite among travellers who want one slower, cooler stretch before flying home.

How long to stay
A day trip from Marrakech works, but the drive is about three hours each way, so a night or two is much more relaxing. The walled medina is small enough to see on foot.
What a visit looks like
Walk the Skala sea walls, the old Portuguese-built ramparts, at sunset, watch the blue fishing boats in the port, and eat fish at the stalls beside it. The medina became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Entry to some of the sea bastions is ticketed, so check on arrival.
When to go
The town is famous for its wind, which can be strong on the ramparts and the beach. April to June and September to early November are the usual recommendations, and September is often calmer. A well-known music festival in June brings crowds.
