Meknes
Meknes was Sultan Moulay Ismail's 17th-century capital, built with imperial ambitions, vast granaries, miles of wall, and the monumental Bab Mansour gate. It's usually paired with a day trip to nearby Volubilis, and makes a quieter counterpoint to Fez's medina.

Planning a visit to Meknes
How long to stay
Meknes is about 60 km from Fez. A half day covers the main sights, and it combines well with Volubilis in one day. Stay a night if you want the medina at an easier pace.
What a visit looks like
Start at Bab Mansour, the great gate built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries under Sultan Moulay Ismail and completed after his death. Then visit his mausoleum, which non-Muslims may enter, and walk through the medina from Place el-Hedim. Modest dress and removing shoes inside the mausoleum are expected.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer afternoons are hot, so plan the monuments for the morning.
How it fits with the rest of a trip
Meknes is one of Morocco's four imperial cities and sits between Fez and Rabat, so we usually add it on the road with Volubilis rather than as a separate stay.
