Trekking in the High Atlas: what beginners should know
You don't need Toubkal-level ambition to get real mountain walking in.
The High Atlas is best known internationally for Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak: a genuine multi-day climb requiring reasonable fitness and, for the summit push, some scrambling. That's not what most travellers on a general Morocco trip are looking for, and it's not required to experience the range.
Valleys like Imlil, Ourika, and Ouirgane offer day walks between Berber villages along centuries-old footpaths, irrigation channels, and walnut groves: graded for reasonably active travellers rather than technical hikers, with distance and elevation easily adjusted to the group.
A typical day involves 3–5 hours of walking with a local guide, often including lunch at a village home, and covers noticeably more varied terrain, river crossings, terraced fields, mudbrick villages, than the High Atlas's more famous peaks suggest from photos alone.
For anyone wanting more than a day but less than a Toubkal expedition, a 2–3 day village-to-village walk with guesthouse stays each night is a good middle ground, and one we build into itineraries regularly for travellers who want the mountains without the technical commitment.
