Ourika Valley or Ouzoud Falls: which Marrakech day trip?

Ourika Valley or Ouzoud Falls: which Marrakech day trip?

Both get you out of the city and into the Atlas. One is an easy mountain valley, the other is a long day to Morocco's most famous waterfall.

Written by Morocco Tailored Tours.

Marrakech is the base for some of Morocco's easiest day trips, and two of the most popular head in opposite directions: south into the Ourika Valley, and north-east to the Ouzoud waterfalls. They're both worth doing, but they suit different kinds of day.

Ourika is the closer of the two, roughly an hour to an hour and a half from the city depending on traffic. The road follows a river into the High Atlas foothills, passing Amazigh villages, terraced fields, and riverside restaurants built out over the water. Many visitors continue to Setti Fatma, at the end of the valley, for a short, often slightly scrambly walk up to a series of small waterfalls. It's a good option in summer, when the valley is noticeably cooler than Marrakech, and it works for a half day or a relaxed full day.

Ouzoud is the bigger sight. The falls drop roughly a hundred metres into pools in the Middle Atlas, near Azilal, and are among the highest in the country. Paths lead down alongside the cascades to the base, where small boats run up close to the spray, and Barbary macaques are a regular sight along the route. The trade-off is distance: it's typically two and a half to three hours each way, so it really is a full day out and not a quick escape.

Choosing between them mostly comes down to energy and season. If you want a scenic, low-effort day that leaves room for lunch by the river, Ourika is the easier choice. If you want a dramatic natural sight and don't mind the drive, Ouzoud delivers more wow per photo. Spring is generally the best time for both, when water levels are higher, while the falls can be noticeably weaker after a dry summer.

Either can be combined with something else rather than done alone: Ourika pairs naturally with an evening in the Agafay desert, and Ouzoud can be part of a longer route toward the Middle Atlas or Fez. If you'd like the day built around your pace, including a private driver and a sensible start time, that's a simple request to add to any Marrakech itinerary.

A few common questions

It depends more on region than month: spring and autumn suit the desert and Marrakech best, while the coast stays comfortable even in summer. Read the full guide.
Many nationalities, including the US, UK, EU, and Canada, can enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days, but requirements vary by passport and do change. Read the full guide.
Seven days covers one region well, mountains and desert or the imperial cities. Ten to fourteen lets you combine two without rushing either. Read the full guide.
A private tour buys you control over pace and timing that independent travel or a fixed group departure usually can't match, at a higher cost per person. Read the full guide.
