What animals actually live in Morocco

In the Middle Atlas cedar forests, Barbary macaques are the animal most visitors actually see, often right along the roadside around Ifrane and Azrou. They're wild but very habituated to people, which is a different thing from being tame.

In the Sahara and pre-Saharan zones, the more distinctive animals, fennec foxes, desert monitors, various snakes and scorpions, are mostly nocturnal and genuinely hard to spot on an ordinary visit. Camels are the animal most associated with a desert trip, but they're domesticated working animals, not wildlife. What you're riding or photographing at a desert camp belongs to someone; it isn't something you've stumbled across in the wild.

Along the Atlantic coast, birdlife is the more reliable sighting. Storks nest visibly on ramparts and minarets in several coastal and inland towns, and lagoons further north sit on real migratory routes for flamingos and other waterbirds.

If seeing specific wildlife matters to your trip, tell us upfront when planning. Some sightings, storks, macaques, are close to guaranteed in the right places, while others, fennec foxes for instance, come down to luck more than anything an itinerary can promise.
