Fez to Chefchaouen
North into the Rif toward Chefchaouen, founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali ben Rachid as a mountain stronghold against Portuguese incursions from the coast, the hills turning greener past the Sais plain, with the afternoon free to walk the blue lanes.

Chefchaouen to Tangier
An early walk through Chefchaouen before the crowds, the blue wash most often traced to Jewish refugees who settled the Mellah quarter in the 1930s, then on to Tangier by early afternoon: a city whose position at the mouth of the Mediterranean gave it a cosmopolitan, slightly renegade history as an international zone for much of the 20th century.

A guided morning through the medina and kasbah, including the old American Legation, the first foreign public property the United States government ever owned abroad, gifted by Sultan Moulay Suliman in 1821 and now a small museum. If time allows, a short drive out to Cap Spartel, the headland where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and the nearby Caves of Hercules, with the Spanish coast visible across the Strait of Gibraltar on a clear day.
