Essaouira or Agadir: which coastal stop fits your trip?
Both are on the Atlantic. That's roughly where the similarity ends.

Essaouira is a walled 18th-century medina with a working fishing port, steady wind, and a slower pace, it's the coastal stop for travellers who want more of the atmosphere they came to Morocco for, just by the sea instead of inland.
Agadir is a modern, rebuilt city (after a 1960 earthquake) with wide beaches, resort-style hotels, and a more relaxed, less historic feel. It's a reasonable base if what you actually want is a beach holiday with easy amenities, or a jumping-off point for surfing at nearby Taghazout.
For a Morocco itinerary that already includes Marrakech, Fez, or the desert, Essaouira is almost always the better fit, it's closer to Marrakech (about 2.5 hours), and its medina complements the rest of the trip instead of feeling like a separate holiday.
Agadir makes more sense as its own trip, or as a longer beach-focused stay tacked onto the end of a Morocco itinerary rather than woven through the middle of one.
