Taghazout, Sidi Kaouki, Agadir: choosing your Atlantic coast stop

Beyond Essaouira, Morocco's Atlantic coast splits into a surf village, a windy wild beach, and a big resort city.

Written by Morocco Tailored Tours.

Most visitors know Essaouira, but the Atlantic coast south of it offers several very different stops, and picking the right one depends on what kind of beach time you actually want. Taghazout, Sidi Kaouki, and Agadir each cater to a different traveller.

Taghazout is a small fishing village north of Agadir that has become Morocco's best-known surf destination. Its point breaks draw surfers through much of the year, and the village is set up for that, with surf camps, yoga studios, and casual cafes. Beginners tend to find gentler conditions in the warmer months, while winter swells attract more experienced surfers. It's relaxed, informal, and more about the water than the sights.

Sidi Kaouki is much quieter, a wide wild beach south of Essaouira with very little development. It's known for strong, steady winds, which makes it popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, and it also offers camel and horse rides along the sand. Accommodation is small-scale and simple, which is part of the appeal for travellers who want space and a slower pace rather than facilities.

Agadir is the largest of the three, a modern resort city that was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake. It has a long sandy beach, a seafront promenade, and plenty of hotels, restaurants, and conventional holiday infrastructure. It's less atmospheric than the smaller stops, but it's practical, easy to reach by air, and suits families and anyone who wants straightforward beach days with good amenities.

If you're deciding, think about the rest of your trip. Agadir works as an easy beach add-on after a busy route, Taghazout suits active travellers, and Sidi Kaouki suits those who want to be left alone. Our post comparing Essaouira and Agadir covers the more classic choice, and any of these coast stops can be added to a private itinerary that also includes Marrakech or the desert.

A few common questions

Yes, broadly, including for solo travellers, with the same common-sense precautions you'd use in any unfamiliar city. Read the full guide.
It depends more on region than month: spring and autumn suit the desert and Marrakech best, while the coast stays comfortable even in summer. Read the full guide.
Many nationalities, including the US, UK, EU, and Canada, can enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days, but requirements vary by passport and do change. Read the full guide.
Seven days covers one region well, mountains and desert or the imperial cities. Ten to fourteen lets you combine two without rushing either. Read the full guide.
A private tour buys you control over pace and timing that independent travel or a fixed group departure usually can't match, at a higher cost per person. Read the full guide.
