Eid al-Adha in Morocco: what the holiday actually involves

Eid al-Adha, the "Feast of Sacrifice," commemorates the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience. It's marked across the Muslim world with a ritual sheep sacrifice for families who can afford it, and the meat is traditionally shared between the household, extended family, and those in need.

In Morocco it works a lot like Christmas does as a family occasion elsewhere. People travel home to be with family, plenty of businesses close for a day or two, and tourism-facing services get noticeably quieter since guides, drivers, and shop owners are usually with their own families too.

Like Ramadan, the date shifts every year on the lunar calendar, so check it against your travel window instead of assuming. If your trip does overlap, a private tour operator can usually work around the closures. It's genuinely one of the few times of year worth building extra flexibility into a schedule.
