Ramadan in Morocco: what changes, and what to expect as a visitor
The month shifts every year, and so does the rhythm of the country while it's happening.

Ramadan is the Islamic holy month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. Because it follows the lunar calendar, it moves roughly eleven days earlier each year instead of falling on a fixed date, so check the current year's dates rather than assuming from a previous trip.
The daily rhythm shifts noticeably. Many smaller, local restaurants close or cut their hours during the day, while riads, hotels, and restaurants used to travellers keep serving visitors, sometimes just a bit more discreetly than usual. Evenings, after the sunset meal (iftar), get livelier than the daytime, with cafés and streets busier later into the night than the rest of the year.
Non-Muslim visitors aren't expected to fast. But eating, drinking, or smoking visibly in public during daylight hours reads as inconsiderate in most places outside clearly touristic zones. It's easy enough to be discreet: eat indoors instead of at an open street table for the month.
A trip that overlaps with Ramadan doesn't need to be avoided. Some guides and drivers prefer to be home for the evening meal with family, which is worth asking about when planning. But the atmosphere in the evenings, lit-up medinas, a shared daily rhythm, is genuinely one of the more memorable times to be in the country.
