Morocco's history of astronomy and alchemy

Fez's Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and recognised by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest existing, continually operating degree-granting institution in the world, was a genuine centre of scholarship across theology, law, mathematics, and astronomy, part of the wider network of learning connecting Morocco to Andalusia and the broader Islamic world during the medieval period.

Marrakech has its own claim through Ibn al-Banna al-Marrakushi, a 13th-century mathematician and astronomer born in the city. His work on arithmetic and astronomical tables belonged to a real tradition of applied astronomy across the Islamic world, driven largely by practical needs. Calculating prayer times and the direction of Mecca (qibla) required genuine astronomical and mathematical skill, and mosque orientation across Morocco still reflects that work.

Alchemy is a harder claim to pin specifically to Morocco. It was a real strand of scholarship across the medieval Islamic world more broadly, with figures like the earlier Jabir ibn Hayyan associated with its foundations, and Morocco's scholarly centres connected to that wider tradition through Andalusia. That's different from being an independent, separately documented alchemical centre in its own right, and it's worth knowing the difference before repeating a stronger claim than the history actually supports.

None of this is heavily signposted for visitors today; there's no "astronomy museum" built around it. But the Al-Qarawiyyin's library (partially viewable) and the sheer density of historic madrasas in Fez are about as close as you'll get to seeing this history in person instead of just reading about it.
