The Marrakech to Sahara road: Ouarzazate, Dades and Todra Gorge
The journey to the dunes is a trip in itself, and these are the stops that actually deserve your time.
Written by Morocco Tailored Tours.
The road from Marrakech to the Sahara is long, and it's easy to treat it as a transfer. That's a mistake. Between the Atlas crossing and the dunes lie some of Morocco's most distinctive landscapes, and how you split the drive matters more than which desert camp you end up in.
The first big moment is the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which carries the road over the High Atlas at more than 2,000 metres. On the far side, the scenery changes quickly: green valleys give way to dry red earth, and earthen kasbahs start appearing along the route. Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar, is the most famous of these, and we've written separately about what a visit is actually like.
Ouarzazate, the next major town, has long been a base for film productions, thanks to its light and its surrounding landscapes, and its studios are a fun stop if you're curious about that history. It's also a useful logistical break rather than a must-see in itself. Nearby, the palm grove at Skoura and its kasbahs make a quieter, greener alternative for travellers who want to slow down.
Further east, the Dades Valley is known for its dramatic rock formations and winding mountain road, including the Monkey Fingers, which we cover in their own article. The valley is a natural overnight stop, with guesthouses perched along the cliffs, and it's worth allowing time to walk even a short section rather than only viewing it from the vehicle.
A short drive away, the Todra Gorge is a narrow canyon with rock walls rising steeply on both sides, and it's a good place for an easy walk along the river or, for those who want more, some climbing and trekking nearby. The oasis around Tinghir makes a pleasant contrast, with palm groves and irrigated fields below the gorge. Many travellers choose between Dades and Todra for their overnight, but with a flexible plan it's possible to see both.
After that, the road continues toward Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Building the route as a three-day trip with a night around Dades or Todra makes the whole drive feel like part of the journey. If you'd like to shape the stops and pace yourself, this is exactly the kind of route we build as a private itinerary.
