A first-timer's route through the Marrakech medina
Where to start when every street looks the same as the last.
The Marrakech medina isn't laid out to be understood from a map: it was built for people who already knew where they were going. First-time visitors usually do best picking one fixed point, like the Jemaa el-Fna, and making short loops out and back rather than trying to cross the whole thing in a straight line.
Mornings are quieter and cooler, and the souks nearer the square (spices, lanterns, leather) are easiest to browse before the midday crowds. The dyers' souk and the smaller workshops further in are worth the extra walk if you have a guide who knows the route: considerably harder to find on your own.
By late afternoon, head back toward the square as the light softens and the food stalls start setting up. The Jemaa el-Fna at dusk, seen from one of the rooftop cafés on its edge, is a reasonable way to end a first day before diving deeper the next.
