Famous festivals and celebrations in Morocco

The Gnaoua World Music Festival in Essaouira, usually held in June, is probably the best known internationally. It grew out of the spiritual Gnawa music tradition and now pairs Gnawa musicians with jazz, rock, and other international acts across several days of free outdoor concerts through the old town.

The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music, generally in spring, takes a different angle, bringing spiritual and devotional music from multiple religious traditions, not only Islamic, into the historic setting of the Fez medina, often staged in old palaces and riad courtyards instead of a single venue.

Away from the big cities, moussems, regional festivals often tied to a local saint's shrine or a seasonal harvest, are a less internationally known but genuinely rooted part of the calendar. The Rose Festival in Kelaat M'Gouna, in the Dades valley, celebrates the annual rose harvest that feeds the region's rosewater and cosmetics industry, and the Imilchil marriage moussem in the Atlas is a well-documented traditional gathering historically tied to courtship and marriage among local Amazigh communities.
