Tangier
Tangier's position at the mouth of the Mediterranean gave it a cosmopolitan, slightly renegade history: an international zone for much of the 20th century, home to writers and smugglers alike. Its medina is smaller and easier to navigate than Fez's, and Spain is visible across the water on a clear day.

How long to stay
One night is enough for the main sights, and a second gives time for the medina without a schedule. Day tours that take in the medina, the Kasbah and the coast usually run five to six hours.
What a visit looks like
The medina spreads out from the Grand Socco, and the Kasbah has ramparts and a small museum. Outside town, Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, has a lighthouse and sunset views, and the Caves of Hercules open onto the sea nearby. Tangier was an international zone until 1956, which is why writers and artists came here.
When to go
Spring and autumn are comfortable. Summers are warm but tempered by the sea, and winters are mild and often wet.
