Three days is the shortest way to reach the real Sahara from Marrakech, and it is a lot of road. We say that plainly because it shapes the trip: two long driving days, broken up by Ait Benhaddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge, with one night under the stars at Erg Chebbi in between. With your own driver-guide, you stop when you want, eat where you want and set the pace. If you have five days, the 5-day route is gentler.

Day by day

This itinerary is a starting point. The order and pace can be adjusted once we know what matters most to you.

1

Marrakech to the Dades Valley

We leave Marrakech early and cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass. At Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a local guide takes you through the ksar. We continue past Ouarzazate and along the road of kasbahs to the Dades Valley, where you spend the night.

About 6 hours on the road, roughly 310 km, plus stops

2

Dades Valley to Merzouga

We drive east to the Todra Gorge and, if you want, walk a short way between its canyon walls. We reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, ride camels into the dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset, and spend the night in a desert camp.

About 4.5 hours on the road, roughly 260 km, plus stops

Desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, chosen with you and subject to availability

3

Merzouga to Marrakech

After sunrise in the dunes and breakfast at camp, we start the long drive back through the Draa Valley and over the Atlas to Marrakech. This is the longest day of the trip, so we leave early and stop for lunch and views along the way. Your driver takes you to your hotel or the airport.

Questions about this route

It is the shortest route that reaches the real dunes, and it is a lot of road: about six hours on the first day and nine to ten with stops on the last. If you can spare five days, the five-day route spreads the same ground over four nights and is gentler.
Day one is about six hours of driving plus stops, day two about four and a half, and day three nine to ten hours with stops. Your driver-guide builds in breaks at Ait Benhaddou, the Todra Gorge and the Draa Valley.
Yes. The route can finish in Fez by crossing the Middle Atlas on the last day, and our six-day Marrakech to Fez route is built around that direction.
Camps vary from simple to very comfortable. We choose with you, subject to availability, and tell you exactly what is included before you book.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Winter nights in the desert can be cold, and summer days are very hot, so we plan the timing with you.
Yes. A 3-day tour from Marrakech reaches the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, with a night in a desert camp, and returns to Marrakech on the third day. It means about six hours on the road on day one and nine to ten with stops on day three. The 5-day route covers the same ground at a gentler pace.
