Casablanca in a day: is it worth the stop?
Most flights land there. Not many trips are built around it: here's what actually justifies the time.
Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and its financial center, and it looks the part: modern towers, wide boulevards, heavy traffic. It's not what most travellers picture when they imagine Morocco, and for good reason: it doesn't have an old medina on the scale of Fez or Marrakech.
The one unambiguous reason to stop is the Hassan II Mosque: one of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the Atlantic, with a minaret over 200 metres tall. It's open to non-Muslim visitors on guided tours at set times, which is unusual for an active mosque in Morocco.
Beyond the mosque, the Art Deco buildings downtown and the Corniche waterfront are worth a walk if you have the afternoon, but neither needs more than a few hours.
Our honest advice: if your flight lands in Casablanca, see the mosque and move on the same day or the next morning, unless you specifically want city time before heading to the medinas and the desert.
