Volubilis: Morocco's best-preserved Roman ruins
A working Roman city for roughly three centuries, with mosaics still in the open air rather than behind glass.

Volubilis was founded in the 3rd century BC and became a Roman provincial city around 40 AD, sitting near the empire's southwestern edge in what's now northern Morocco. It was abandoned by the late 3rd century. That, combined with earthquake damage rather than any continuous rebuilding, is a big part of why so much has survived intact.
The mosaics are the main draw. Floor mosaics depicting mythological scenes are still in place inside several of the old houses, not relocated to a museum case, and it makes walking through feel more like visiting an abandoned house than touring a curated exhibit. The triumphal arch and the basilica, both substantially intact, anchor either end of the site.
Volubilis made the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997. Most people visit as a half-day trip paired with nearby Meknes rather than staying overnight. There's a modest visitor centre, but no real town around the ruins themselves.
There's very little shade across the site, so a morning visit, or at least avoiding the hour either side of midday in summer, makes a real difference to how long you can comfortably stay.
