Marrakech to Dades Valley
Over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, North Africa's highest major mountain pass, cut by the French military into an old caravan trail in 1936. We stop to walk the earthen ksar at Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and a filming location for Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator, then continue through the Skoura palm grove to the Dades Valley by evening.

Through the Todra Gorge, where the Todgha River has carved walls up to 160 metres high in places just 10 metres apart, and across the flat hamada to Erg Chebbi, dunes the wind has piled up to 150 metres, among the tallest in Morocco. We arrive as they turn from gold to rust at dusk.

No driving today: a camel trek at sunset, time to walk the ridgelines barefoot, and a shared tagine dinner at camp with Berber drumming before a second night under the stars.

A long but direct drive back over the Atlas, with stops built in wherever the group needs them: a last look at the dunes at sunrise is worth the early start.
