Day by day

A working draft: the order and pace are ours to adjust once we know what matters most to you.

Marrakech to Essaouira

A relaxed morning drive through argan groves toward the coast (look for goats climbing the trees, a genuine local sight, not a staged one). Sultan Mohammed III founded Essaouira in 1765 as a rival port to Agadir and had it laid out by Théodore Cornut, a captured French military engineer, on a grid plan with ramparts modelled on Saint-Malo. We arrive in time to walk the 18th-century sea walls as the light turns gold before dinner.

Essaouira

A full free day: the blue fishing boats and grilled-sardine stalls at the port, the medina's thuya-wood marquetry workshops, the beach, or a surf lesson if the wind cooperates. It usually does. The afternoon Alizé trade winds are strong and reliable enough to make this one of the world's better kitesurfing towns.

Essaouira

A second day at your own pace, or a half-day trip to a nearby women's argan oil cooperative to see the oil pressed and ground by hand: a craft unique to this part of Morocco, since the argan tree grows wild only in the Souss-Massa region.

Questions about this route

On its own it's better as an add-on: most first-time travellers pair it with a longer Marrakech or desert itinerary.
Often, yes, it's part of what makes it a good sailing and surfing town, but pack a layer even in summer.

How many days do you actually need in Marrakech?

Enough to slow down, not so many that you run out of medina.

Both are on the Atlantic. That's roughly where the similarity ends.
