Hammam etiquette: what to expect at a Moroccan bathhouse
A genuine local ritual, not a spa treatment dressed up for tourists.
A traditional hammam is a steam bathhouse, used by Moroccans as a regular part of life rather than an occasional indulgence: most neighbourhoods have a local one, separate sessions or separate facilities for men and women. Tourist-oriented hammams, often attached to spas or riads, offer a more private, guided version of the same ritual.
The typical sequence: a period in a steam room to soften the skin, a full-body scrub with a rough mitt (a kessa) that removes a surprising amount of dead skin, and often a rinse with black soap (savon noir) beforehand. It's more physical than a typical spa treatment: expect some vigorous scrubbing, not a gentle massage.
Traditional hammams are usually attended in underwear rather than fully unclothed, with modesty maintained even in single-sex spaces; tourist-oriented private sessions are more flexible, and staff will explain local norms on arrival if you're unsure.
Booking a private session, which most riad-based or spa hammams offer, removes any uncertainty about etiquette in a shared local space, and it's the version we typically include on wellness-focused itineraries for exactly that reason.
