Buying antiques in Morocco: what to know before you shop

Morocco's souks are full of items sold as antiques: Berber silver jewellery, carved doors and shutters, brass lanterns, old carpets. Some of them really are decades or centuries old. A meaningful share, though, are new pieces deliberately aged or distressed to look older, which isn't necessarily dishonest craftsmanship. It just means "antique" as a spoken claim is worth treating as a starting point for negotiation, not a fact.

Berber jewellery is one of the more collectible categories. Older pieces use techniques and regional motifs, enamel work, niello, specific bead and coin combinations, that vary by tribe and era. A dealer who can explain a piece's origin in real detail is a better sign than one who just calls everything on the table "very old, very rare."

Carpets need their own kind of caution. An old, hand-knotted Berber carpet is a serious purchase, and the difference between that and a newer, machine-assisted piece isn't always obvious to an untrained eye. If a carpet matters to you, buying from a dealer with a real reputation, even at a higher price, is usually worth more than a bargain you can't verify.

One practical note: items that are genuinely old, or culturally significant, can occasionally run into export restrictions. It's rarely an issue for ordinary souvenir purchases. But if you're spending seriously on something sold to you as a real antique, ask about paperwork before you buy, not after.
