Sahara desert day trip from Marrakech: what is realistic

A day trip from Marrakech can reach desert scenery, but not the big Sahara dunes. Here is what each option gives you, and the shortest route that does.

Can you do a Sahara desert day trip from Marrakech?

Not to the real dunes. The Sahara dunes at Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) and Erg Chigaga are a full day's drive from Marrakech each way, so a day trip would leave you in the car for almost all of it. We do not sell that trip, and we would rather tell you so than send you out for a photograph through a windscreen.

What a single day from Marrakech can reach is the Agafay stone desert and the Atlas valleys. Agafay is a rocky plateau about an hour from the city, with big open views and camps, but it is not the sand-dune Sahara. Our journal compares Agafay and the Sahara so you can decide whether it suits you.

The 2-day option: Zagora and the Draa Valley

With two days, Zagora is the realistic choice. It is roughly six hours from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and through the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves and ksour. You get a night on the edge of the desert, stony plains and small dunes rather than one towering erg.

This is a route we can build for you privately, with your own driver-guide, rather than a fixed departure. Tell us your dates and we will confirm the day-by-day plan and the price before you book.

The shortest way to the real dunes: 3 days

If you want the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, three days is the minimum. Our 3-day private tour crosses the Atlas to Ait Benhaddou and the Dades Valley, continues by the Todra Gorge to Merzouga for a night in a desert camp, and returns on the third day. It is a lot of road, and we say so on the tour page. With five days the same route is far more comfortable.

Common questions

Not to the real Sahara dunes. Merzouga and Erg Chigaga are a full day's drive each way. A day trip can reach the Agafay stone desert, and two days reaches Zagora and the Draa Valley.
Zagora is roughly six hours by road. Merzouga, beside the Erg Chebbi dunes, is a long day of nine to ten hours with stops, which is why we suggest at least three days.
Three days. The 3-day private tour from Marrakech to Merzouga includes a night in a desert camp. Five days is more comfortable.
No. Agafay is a stone desert near Marrakech. It is good for a short escape, but it does not have the sand dunes people picture.
