Camel trek in Morocco: private rides into the Sahara dunes
Every camel trek here is part of a private desert tour, with your own driver-guide, so the timing follows the light rather than a group schedule.
What a camel trek in Morocco involves
A camel trek in Morocco usually means a ride of an hour or so from the edge of the dunes to a desert camp, timed for sunset, with the return or the next morning's ride at sunrise. It is slow and quiet, and you sit higher than you expect. You do not need experience, and the camel handlers lead the animals.
On our routes the camel ride is part of the night in the dunes. At Merzouga you ride into Erg Chebbi; the Erg Chigaga route reaches the dunes by 4x4 and a camel ride can be added from camp.
Where the treks go
Erg Chebbi, beside Merzouga, is the most visited: tall dunes, a short ride, and camps close together. Erg Chigaga, past M'hamid, is wilder and quieter, with fewer camps and a longer approach. If you are choosing between them, our journal compares the two desert regions.
When to go and what to wear
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Winter days are mild but the desert is cold at night, and summer heat is serious in the middle of the day, so rides move to late afternoon and early morning. Wear long, loose trousers, closed shoes and a scarf for sun and sand; our journal has a full packing list.
